History of Vendarap

Vendarap music is child of Venda music, it is a mixture of Tshivenda music and Hip-hop/Rap, it is dated early 21st century. Mizo Phyll, Devo Devenger(RIP), and Bomo Unlimited can be seen as fathers of this genre with support from other vendarap legends. It was created as Venda Hip-hop, but it tends to be venda singing and raping music on several non-hip-hop beats. Following are the three major musical eras that Glaso identified as eras that gave rise to Morden vendarap. These eras are distinguished by their musical style, song content, and artist objective

a) Arise of participation

First era is the arise of participation, which was a period of venda people recognizing vendarap. It was between 2013 and 2017, many well-known artists of Morden vendarap joined this genre during this era. It was a period of "freestyling" where artist used to make songs with no meaning just to show audience that Tshivenda language can be used in rapping, mostly on hip-hop beat. At this period, all artists wanted to sing and be hired for performances.

b) Movement of Language and Music type

From 2018 to late 2019 vendarap music was well-known as one  of Venda music genre, this made this genre to move from "freestyling" to "message songs", artists moved from American related hip-hop to exact vendarap. The genre tend to increase music types on vendarap genre by adding a vendarap form of singing and rapping to non-hip-hop beats. Artist’s goal in this time was to sing, booked for shows and fame call.

c) Morden vendarap

Vendarap began to develop a diverse style of singing in the latter part of 2019. Artists tended to pick up other genres' singing styles and methods for conveying messages. Since many producers prefer to create their own beats, Morden vendarap emerged starting in the pandemic year of 2020. Today's vendarap artists want to become extremely famous in order to get hired for performances, team-ups, and podcast interviews related to modern human economic behaviour
